A Christmas Prayer
By David Block
Our Father in Heaven,
Great and blessed is your name. You are the God of infinity; you have no beginning and no end. There are no boundaries or limits on your power, presence and knowledge. You are the God of Creation, causing all things to have their beginning. You are the God of Providence, guiding all men upon the path that you have set before them. You are the Sustainer, for apart from you there is no life. You are the God of my salvation, for you are my Rock and Fortress.
I thank you for the incarnation of the Word. The thought that the eternal Son became flesh and dwelt among us is too lofty to comprehend. But yet, He did come and walked on the very same dirt that I walk. He breathed the air I do. He became a human. This event you predestined before time for the benefit of all mankind, especially for those who believe in Him. As I think of the tiny baby Jesus it is hard to comprehend that he was at the same time the Everlasting Father, the great I Am.
I thank you for having the angels announce the birth of Christ to the shepherds. I find hope in the fact that you would use the despised and foolish in this world in your plan. I laud you for drawing the wise men to the Christ child, to show me that riches, nationality, distance, age or any other human distinction does not matter when you call a person. I thank you for revealing in your Scripture how you guided every event surrounding the birth, life and death of your holy Son.
Father, during this holiday season may your will be done in my life. Please forgive me of my iniquity. Send the angel to take a coal from your altar and touch it to my lips so that all my words may be straight from you. Help me to forgive all those that wrong me and allow me to exhibit the same mercy you have shown to me.
Father, provide for me this Christmas and the rest of the year. I know that the gifts that I have to give are from you and belong to you. May I give away my possessions all year long and may I think of others as you have thought of and provided for me.
Please, merciful Savior, bless my family and friends. May you use the message of this Christmas season to open the hearts and minds of your elect and may they step forward into your light that shines so brightly. May you turn your countenance upon my church that it might flourish and serve you with a heart that is free from pride and boastfulness. May our boasting be in you alone.
Now to you Father, Son, and Holy Spirit the triune and thrice holy God be glory, honor, praise, and power today and forever more.
In the blessed name of the holy Son, incarnate Deity, Jesus Christ, Amen.
